Understanding Valve Types for Oil & Gas Applications
Introduction
Selecting the right valve for oil & gas applications is critical for operational safety, efficiency, and compliance. With pressures ranging from atmospheric to ASME Class 2500 and temperatures from cryogenic (-196°C) to extreme high heat, the choice of valve type can make or break a system.
Gate Valves
Gate valves are the workhorse of the oil & gas industry. Used primarily for on/off isolation service, they offer full bore flow with minimal pressure drop. BDK’s cast steel gate valves conform to API 600 and are available in sizes from 15mm to 1200mm.
Ball Valves
Ball valves provide quarter-turn operation and excellent shut-off capability. Trunnion mounted ball valves are preferred for large bore pipeline applications where double piston effect ensures reliable sealing even at low differential pressures.
Check Valves
Non-return valves prevent backflow and protect equipment. BDK offers swing check, dual plate, and non-slam designs to suit various flow conditions and piping configurations.
Conclusion
The right valve selection depends on service conditions, media type, pressure-temperature rating, and operational requirements. BDK’s engineering team can help specify the optimal valve for any oil & gas application.
